Batch #12: Not Just Coffee

Batch #12: Not Just Coffee

May 6, 2025Matthew Saenz

POUR OVER THOUGHTS:

This space isn’t just about coffee. It’s where I process.
Where I unpack the trial and error.
Where I figure things out—and hopefully help someone else do the same.

If you decide to move forward from here and if you know me already; you won’t be surprised by what you read and see from me. If we’ve never met, Salud, my friend, as I know we can learn from each other with cup in hand. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but coffee fuels the hand that writes the story…..

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THESE POSTS:

Each blog will follow a simple structure because though I might seem complex, I am very simple.

  • The “Pour Over” Story – A real experience (usually with a little sting).
  • The Steps – What I did, what I missed, and how it went.
  • The “No Judgement” Takeaway – A straight-up, no-fluff lesson or tip you can use.

This isn’t me claiming to be an expert. It’s me sharing what I’ve built, broken, and rebuilt—whether it’s coffee, business, or just life.

WHY I WRITE: THE SHELL VALUES

At GoodShell Coffee, we built our foundation on 5 principles:

  • Simplicity
  • Honesty Upfront
  • Empathy Always
  • Active Listening
  • Lifelong Learning

These aren’t just words on a website. They guide everything—how I roast, how I run this business, and how I show up here.

That’s what these posts are. A place to be transparent, to be real, and to keep learning out loud.

COFFEE IS MY SAFE PLACE TO VENT

Let’s be honest: it’s getting harder to talk.
Harder to share frustration, ask real questions, or even admit a mistake without things turning political or performative.

But coffee? Coffee is still neutral ground. A lot of the people for that matter who have way more experience than me rarely started with a 6-month how to guide. The stories I’ve heard and loved came from those that came into this with no experience, got behind the wheel and just started doing it. They asked questions along the way and watched others learn new things.

It gives me a space to vent without judgment. To say, “Here’s what happened,” and not have to worry about picking sides or dodging opinions. That’s why I write about it. That’s why I roast. It’s therapy, warmth, and work—all in one cup.

FOR THE SKIMMERS, THE THINKERS, AND THE CURIOUS

Whether you’re here for the story, the lesson, or just want to grab the gist—I’ve got you.

This blog is for anyone who wants to grow, try, build, or even just learn by watching someone else fail first. You will hear the expression “I got you” more than once in my posts because I want you to know it’s a safe space to always ask with no judgment. Heck, someone once just did and went with it, and maybe was never told they were wrong but later it became gospel.

THANKS FOR READING….

If this post hit home, drop a comment or share it with someone who’s building something too. Let’s roast, reflect, and rebuild—together.
